Important Updates

A note on vaccinations:

Italy has officially opened its borders to Americans! With a caveat: You must either A.) Be vaccinated or B.) Provide proof of a negative COVID test within 48 hours of your departure time. If you’ve been vaccinated, bring your vaccination card with you. This is now just as important as your passport. We recommend making a few copies, laminating them, and keeping them in different travel bags, just in case.

International driving permits:

In order to drive a car legally in Italy, you’ll need an international driving permit. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Download and fill out an application, and bring it to your nearest AAA branch office.

  • Two original passport pictures (also available at AAA branch offices).

  • A valid U.S. driver's license.

  • Pay $20 USD permit fee.

Travel Recommendations

Flying into Pisa?

You’re ~1 hour from Volterra. We suggest renting a car. Warning: Your ride through Tuscany will be slightly distracting, 100% swoon-worthy.

Flying into Florence?

You’re ~1.5 hours from Volterra. We suggest renting a car—but not without a panini or gelato first.

Flying into Rome?

You’re ~3.5 hours from Volterra. Down for a road trip? Rent a car in Rome, but grab some pizza first before heading out. Otherwise, you can take the train from Rome to Pisa (2.5 hours) and a rent a car from there.

Flying into Milan?

While Emirates offers a cushy international flight, you’re a ways from Volterra, ~5 hours. If you’re up for a long road trip, rent a car—just eat something before you head out; Autogrills (Italian gas stations) are nicer than most of those found stateside, but the food is nothing to write home about. However, if you find yourself hungry on the road, this article can help you make the most of your Autogrill pitstop.

If you’re down for the Euro-trip experience, you can take the train from Milan to Pisa (~3 hours) and rent a car from there.
